How to find a gym buddy in the UK
You want to train, but going on your own can make it easy to put off another session. Maybe you’ve moved, joined a new gym, or your friends have different schedules. A gym buddy starts with someone you can make a workable plan with.
Start with the routine you can actually keep
Write down your gym or area, the days you can train and the kind of session you want. “A beginner-friendly workout on Tuesday evenings at my gym” gives someone more to work with than “looking for a fitness friend”.
Look for compatible availability and expectations. You don’t need identical goals, but it helps to agree whether you want company, a regular appointment or someone doing the same session.
Look where people already train
Try a class you can attend regularly, ask your gym about member groups, or look for a local sports club. Seeing the same people makes a conversation easier to start. Ask staff before putting up a notice or sharing a link in a member group.
If running is your thing, England Athletics’ RunTogether has a group finder for social runs in England. Check the group’s own information for suitability and availability. A club or group can be a useful way to meet people before arranging a smaller session together.
Make the first message easy to answer
Try: “Hi, I’m looking for someone to train with around [area]. I usually go [days and times] and I’m interested in [activity]. Would you be up for a first session together?”
When talking in person, choose a moment when they’re free to chat. Keep it short and make it easy for them to decline. A friendly conversation is a better start than interrupting someone’s workout.
Agree on one session first
Pick the venue, time, activity and meeting point. Check any entry fee or membership requirement before either of you travels. Start with one session so you can see whether your routines work together.
Meet somewhere public, such as your gym reception or an organised group session. You can arrange a workout without sharing your home address. Set your own boundaries and leave if you feel uncomfortable.
If you’re new to the gym
Say so. Look for someone happy to train alongside a beginner and choose a session that fits your experience. A workout buddy can offer company, but ask gym staff or a qualified instructor when you need help with equipment or technique.
